tempera gouache paintings

Aurelia explores the emotionally evocative nature of colour through large-scale canvases. She particularly focuses on musical subject matter and fictioning immersive realms.
All canvases assembled from scratch and stretched in the studio. Aurelia ensures that the most premium materials are used.
Her specific tempera gouache is a well-kept secret, sourced from a European supplier that binds high grade pigments. The velvety, matte quality of tempera makes Aurelia’s paintings texturally unique.

The Fantastical Collaborations
It all begins with an idea. The idea progresses into a journey consisting of a rich exchange of influences and personal visions, eventually reaching a common goal. Aurelia has developed multiple collaborative projects with the artist and illustrator, Bettina Paterson. Their individual styles and perspectives are bridged by their shared understanding of colour, resulting in a unique amalgamation of the truest aspects of both. As a mother-daughter team, their relationship underpins much of their individual creative practises.

The Musical Translations
Music has always been a leading source of inspiration for Aurelia’s exploration of the abstraction of forms and fictional landscapes. She is interested in the intermediality of sonoric and visual expression. Having carried out art historical research in this field, including her dissertation at St Andrews in 2022 (‘From Bach to Boogie-Woogie’), exploring 20th Century artists painting from music, she uses this research in her own artistic processes. Recent series of paintings include Franz Liszt’s twelve Transcendental Études, and a commission for a tripartite series based on the tango, Por una Cabeza.
